B Corp gap analysis

B Corp gap analysis: find out how close you are

How to run one, what it should produce, and when outside help is worth it.

Short answer

A B Corp gap analysis compares what your company already does with each B Lab Standards V2 requirement that applies to your size and sector. The result is a list of what you meet, what's partly in place, and what's missing, so you can plan the work before you submit for audit.

Do I need a B Corp consultant?

No. B Lab does not require one, and many companies certify with an internal team. A consultant is worth it when you lack time or in-house expertise, have a complex structure, or want an experienced eye on judgment calls. B Lab U.S. & Canada keeps a directory of consultants if you want help.

Consultants help most with interpretation: which option to choose on a requirement, whether a policy is strong enough, how to handle a corporate family or multiple sites. They help least with the repetitive work of collecting and organizing documents, which is where most hours go.

Many companies split it: a consultant for strategy and review, and their own team (with a tool) for the evidence. Whichever you choose, B Lab decides certification and an independent assurance provider audits you, so no consultant or vendor can promise an outcome.

How Ecolytics helpsEcolytics supports all three routes: your team on its own, your team with a consultant working in the same account, or a B Academics student team. The platform is the same underneath. See it in a demo →

How do I run a B Corp gap analysis?

Confirm your size and sector, list the Foundation Requirements and Year 0 Impact Topic sub-requirements that apply, mark each as met, partly met or not met, attach the evidence you already have, and turn the gaps into owned, dated tasks.

  1. Check eligibility. You need to be an incorporated business that has operated for at least 12 months.
  2. Set your scope. Size is your worker count or revenue, whichever is lower; sector comes from how you earn revenue.
  3. List what applies. Foundation Requirements plus the Year 0 sub-requirements in each of the seven Impact Topics.
  4. Rate each one. Met, partly met, or not met, with a note on why.
  5. Attach evidence. Policies, records, data. If you can't point to a document, treat it as a gap.
  6. Plan the work. Give every gap an owner and date, and note what's due at Year 3 so you aren't caught out later.

How long does it take to get from gap analysis to certification?

It depends on how many gaps you find. B Lab estimates two to six months from submission to certification, driven mainly by major nonconformities. Preparation before submission is the variable part, from weeks for a company with policies in place to many months for one starting from scratch.

The audit itself takes one to ten days depending on company size. Smaller companies with no major nonconformities could be certified within about two months of submitting, according to B Lab. That makes the gap analysis the best predictor of your timeline: it tells you how much has to be in place before you submit.

How Ecolytics helpsBecause Ecolytics keeps the gap list live, you can see readiness move as gaps close and decide when you're ready to submit. See it in a demo →

FAQ

More questions

Is a gap analysis the same as B Lab's Self-Assessment?

No. The Self-Assessment in B Impact is what you submit. A gap analysis is your own preparation before that, so the Self-Assessment goes smoothly.

Can existing B Corps use a gap analysis for recertification?

Yes. Your old score doesn't carry over to V2, so a fresh gap analysis is the quickest way to see where you stand.

What if we find a gap we can't close before submitting?

Under V2, major nonconformities must be fixed before certification, while minor ones can be addressed by the next audit. Know which is which before you submit.
